Why not just… apologise?

New podcast interview out now!

It sounds so simple.  It’s what we teach our kids to say when someone is hurt, even if the harm was unintentional. But inside many workplaces, apologies are often treated as a formal concession of legal liability, rather than a basic act of humanity.

On this episode of the “Under the Rug at Work” podcast, I joined Nicole Turnbull for a conversation about workplace harm, institutional responses, apology, leadership, power, psychosocial safety, and trauma recovery.

We spoke about:

  • why organisations often move so quickly into protection mode

  • how fear and institutional defensiveness shape workplace responses

  • why empathy, dignity and acknowledgement matter; and

  • what leaders can do differently early on to potentially avoid issues escalating into lengthy and costly battles without venturing into admissions of legal liability or prematurely taking sides.
