I currently serve as Chair of the Advisory Board for Kintsugi Heroes, an Australian not-for-profit organisation that shares inspiring stories of resilience and overcoming adversity. It is recognised for its compassionate approach to storytelling and its positive impact on Australian communities, offering free content accessible through podcasts, events, books, photographic exhibitions, and media collaborations. The organisation draws its name from the Japanese art of Kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with gold, symbolising that imperfections can create beauty and value. Kintsugi’s programs cover diverse social themes, including natural disasters, migration, connecting seniors, and recovery from trauma or illness.

I am also an Advisory Board Member for Future Females Australia, an organisation dedicated to empowering young women entrepreneurs and expanding opportunities for women in business across Australia. The Advisory Board supports the organisation’s growth as it builds a national presence and launches new initiatives including mentoring, masterclasses, and an online platform.

I am an Ambassador for The HALO Trust, the largest civilian humanitarian mine action organisation in the world. The HALO Trust clears landmines and explosives, manages weapons, and delivers education and training. It helps make post-conflict land safe and restores livelihoods in war-affected communities. I serve as an Ambassador, contributing strategic insight, advocacy and networks to support the organisation’s mission and expand awareness of its work globally.

I am a member of Women on Boards. I actively engage in supporting women’s leadership and representation in governance.

I have completed the Governance for Social Impact program through the Centre for Social Impact, as well as an Ethical Leadership course at Harvard University and Executive Ethics at the Cranlana Centre. This has elevated my expertise in how boards and leadership teams can drive purposeful and responsible change with integrity and confidence.

My board and advisory work is values-led and selective, focused on organisations aligned with ethical leadership, inclusion and long-term impact.

If you are a purpose-driven organisation that is seeking a board member who brings strategic insights, values integrity and accountability, and aptly navigates diverse stakeholders and complex change, I may be the person you are looking for.

Ian Westmoreland OAM, Founder, Kintsugi Heroes

“I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Jo Tarnawsky in her role as Chair of the Kintsugi Heroes Advisory Board, as well as through her generous mentorship of me personally as we work to build a sustainable future for the organisation.

Jo brings an exceptional combination of strategic insight, governance expertise, and genuine care for people. At a time when we have been focused on strengthening our foundations and long-term sustainability, her guidance has been both practical and deeply thoughtful. She has an ability to step back, see the bigger picture, and then help translate that into clear, achievable actions.

As Chair, Jo creates a supportive yet accountable environment where ideas are challenged constructively and decisions are made with purpose. She leads with integrity, clarity, and a calm confidence that brings out the best in those around her.

On a personal level, her mentorship has been invaluable. Jo has helped me grow as a leader, encouraging reflection, asking the right questions, and providing steady guidance through both opportunities and challenges.

What stands out most is Jo’s commitment to impact. She genuinely cares about building organisations that not only survive, but thrive in a way that delivers meaningful and lasting value to the community.

I am incredibly grateful for Jo’s contribution to Kintsugi Heroes and would highly recommend her to any organisation seeking a skilled chair, advisor, or mentor.”
